Chapter 278: Cleaning up the Lords
Chapter 278: Cleaning up the Lords
The two companions watched on as the defenders of the village fought bravely to push back the seemingly endless assult of the giant wolf pack. Naturally they both knew that this was a meer prelude to the true assult which would soon be arriving.
Violet in particular never quite understood why beasts and people alike seemed content to send forth their weakest combatants first in any large scale battle.
Only that viewpoint had taken quite the shift during this battle. Here she and Luna were the most powerful combatants on the defending side.
Whilst they could easily clear out vast swarms of the lesser wolves by themselves, that would not actually be the optimal route to take for a couple of reasons.
Firstly defeating such weak beasts would provide them next to no experience of any at all. That coupled with potentially causing them to expend more resources than they could afford with the true threats still out there in the darkness.
Secondly was the fact this this actually provided a great opportunity for the defenders to grow stronger. Sure it was dangerous, but this was a dangerous world, one where you needed to be strong if you want to survive. So whilst Violet and Luna were both happy to try and prevent needless deaths on the side of the defenders, they would not take part in slaying them unless it looked like the defenders were being completely overrun.
Something that thankfully had not happened just yet.
So Violet focused on the various battles taking place around her, constantly keeping herself ready to quickly form a shield in the way of any particularly vicious attack. She could not protect everyone however, small wounds quickly began to build up on the defenders, particularly among the regular villagers.
These were just regular people, not trained fighters like the adventures or natural hunters and predators like Violet and Luna. As such they were comparatively weak when compared to their adversaries.
Still with the aid of the adventures who had spread out to cover the most ground the villagers were managing to hold out.
Their weapons may be makeshift and rudimentary, but their will to defend their homes was stalwart. So whilst they may be weak, Violet did not look down on them, anyone that was willing to fight for both their own and their friends survival, was someone worthy of respect in her eyes.
As the initial waves of attacking wolves had arrived the lords leading this pack had begun to make their own move.
Several massive shapes moved in the darkness, their forms only visible to Luna and Violet’s enhanced eyes curtesy of a old trick utilising Violet’s own void mana bolstering their vision.
The two companions focus instantly shifted to the approaching threat, quickly taking note of how many and how strong their opponents are.
They sent forth their presence, intertwined together surging out to clash with the approaching lords.
The pack leaders answered with their own interwoven presences, yet whilst they did manage to somewhat merge their presences together, it was not to the same profound effect as what Violet and Luna could achieve.
It was like they simply added each others presences on top of one another. Yes, it did enable them to create a greater whole, yet when Violet and Luna merged their own presences the effects were multiplied, creating something freater than the sum of their parts.
Still even with the qualitative boost to their presence as a result of that and their levels, they were unable to truly counter the sheer quantitative effect of the multiple wolves.
But they gained enought information to finalise their simple plan of attack.
The pack leadership seemed to have a singular dominant wolf. This one stood at almost 8 meters long, its powerful body rippling with muscle. The remaining leaders varied in size and strength, yet none were close in strength to the leader.
"I’ll go for the big guy!" Luna announced excitedly.
Violet smiled at her companion as she replied with a challenge in her tone. "Sure thing, I’ll come help you once iv dealt with the rest of them!"
Luna chuckled lightly at her companions words briefly before she turned slightly serious as she spoke quickly to Atlas who was still relatively close by.
"Hey Atlas, we are going to fight to leaders of the pack, don’t be expecting any more aid from us till we are done, fight defensively for now."
To his credit Atlas only took a moment to process her words before he nodded and began to call out orders to the defenders spread across the battlefield.
With that out of the way the two companions smiled at one another and teleported forwards to engage in their own battle.

Atlas worked him magic into a frenzy, his mental tendrils expanded across the entire battlefront as he assaulted the minds of the wolves in various ways. At the same time he kept a close eye on the overall formation, given his specialisation into mental magics he had a natural tendency to lean towards leadership roles.
So he was constantly ordering the combatants to react to threats they had not yet identified.
Yet when he heard the announcement from the two powerful women he was unable to prevent him self from paying some attention to their soon to be battle.
He had already sent some of his mental feelers far past the front lines. With these he had noticed the terrifying pres eve of the leading wolves as they clashed briefly with the two women’s own presence.
Then he watched as both women simply banish from where they stood. He blinked in surprise yet instantly noticed that they had arrived right before the pack leaders.
Then the world seemed to come to a halt as power erupted in the distance.
The world turned purple whilst the air nearly froze.
Then came the explosions.
The ground shook, people and wolves alike lost their balance and tumbled to the ground in surprise. All across the battlefront the fighting came to an adbrupt end as all eyes moved to find the source of the immense disruption.
It seemed even the world itself wanted to witness this fight as the ever present cloud cover parted, allowing the nearly full moon to shine down upon the battlefield below.
The lunar rays illuminating the scene below.
What had once been an mundane grassy hill but minuits ago was already better resembling a wasteland. Flashes of purple nothingness and arctic blue ice raced across the landscape.
Some struck their foes, the purple edged nothingness looking to simply erase entire sections of flesh wherever they struck, be that flesh or soil the terrifying magic did not seem to care.
The winged woman seemed to be drawing the attention of the vast majority of the pack leaders, after a quick count Atlas spotted 8 wolves, no, wait 9! But one of them seemed to already be dead!
The white haired woman on the other hand was facing off against the largest wolf alone, or actually... she wasn’t alone? No wait... he looked closer and his eyes opened even wider as he realised that 4 Luna’s now stood surrounding the giant wolf, each one wielding a different weapon forged from ice.
Then after that eternal moment of stillness during which Atlas took in all of those details, violence unlike anything he had witnessed in his life erupted.
The world around the largest wolf turned into a arctic wasteland, spears of ice forming from both the floor and air around the copies of the woman before shorting towards the large wolf.
The wolf’s fur in turn turned from nearly silver in colour to actual steel, shrugging off most of the incoming projectiles. Yet that act simply opened it up to the physical attacks from the clones.
In the other side of the hill the lone winged woman faced off against the other wolves in a display of magic might that made Atlas suddenly feel incompetent as a mage.
Spears, bolts beams and shields appeared before her with unbelievable speed. The power behind each attack enought to maim any that failed to evade.
The foolish tried to relay on turning their fur to metal to block the attacks, yet the woman’s magic simply ignored the defenses that Atlas was sure could shrug off any regular persons mightiest attack.
Runes seemed to carve themselves into reality around the battlefield, out of which more spears shot forth. The wolves tried to close the distance yet when one got close enough to try and swipe at her, she simply vanished and reappeared some distance away. Her magical bombardment never stopping.
Atlas and the other defenders watched in stunned awe as the two women systematically eradicated the leads of the fearsome pack.
What could have been a calamitous even for this region of the kingdom seemed to be nothing more than a light workout for those two.
In all truth, the wolves never even stood a chance.
One after another dropped to the ground in a heap as their life left their bodies until not a single one of the Lord leveled beasts remained.
Then just as silence descended upon the area both women suddenly snapped their heads in a particular direction, then instantly appearing besides one another as they still faced the same direction.
Atlas, who was still in a state of mild shock wondered what could possibly cause the two of them to react in such a way turned to look in the same direction.
There he saw a sight that would likely haunt him for the rest of his days.
If before he had thought that the ’lead’ wolf was giant. He didn’t understand what giant truly meant.
There a single hill over from the girls stood a truly giant wolf. It looked to be almost 25 meters in length, 6-7 tall and its presence suddenly engulfed the entire battlefield with its overwhelming might.
Then it tilted its head back and let loose a howl that seemed to shake the very foundations of the world as it glared at the two women that had just defeated its pack mates.
