"Yui hasn't been home these past two days, thanks to her and me taking turns keeping watch..."
“Like this…” After a long silence, Su Qing turned her head and reached out to place her hand on Yui’s head, gently stroking it twice.
When Mahiru saw this, she did not stop it; there was not even shock or other emotion in her eyes.
"The nurse gave you a lot of IV fluids," she broke the silence, her voice regaining some of its usual order, but still carrying a hint of tension.
"The doctor said that your body is severely deficient in various nutrients, and you will definitely feel very... very hungry when you wake up."
As she spoke, she turned and picked up the insulated container, opening the lid. A warm, white steam carrying the aroma of rice immediately rose up, blurring her features.
“But you can’t eat greasy food right away,” Mahiru’s voice sounded particularly gentle in the rising steam. “You should drink some porridge first to let your stomach adjust slowly.”
She picked up a spoon, scooped up a small spoonful of warm white porridge, placed it to her lips, and carefully blew on it several times until she was sure it wouldn't burn him before gently offering it to Su Qing's lips.
"I bought this this morning and just heated it up," she explained.
While he was explaining, Su Qing had already swallowed it.
"Eat slowly, don't rush." Mahiru reminded him after seeing this, and then repeated the action to feed him the second bite, but her outstretched hand quickly stopped in mid-air, as if she had been stunned.
Su Qing is crying.
There was no warning, and there was no sound.
Only a single, clear liquid, like a tear, slowly slid down his pale cheek, gathered at his chin, and dripped onto the snow-white sheet, leaving a small, dark stain.
"Qing...why are you crying?"
Mahiru felt a soreness in her eyes.
Why did I suddenly start crying when I hadn't even started crying yet?
You're too cunning...
"I just think...it tastes really good, and...you seem to have lost weight these past few days."
Su Qing wanted to bend down to take a second bite, but Zhen Zhou's hand had already withdrawn at some point.
Hmm... I don't think I got to taste that bite just now?
"I won't give you any more, I won't give you any more..."
The soreness accumulated in my eyes, growing stronger and stronger, and the surging emotions burst forth like a dam breaking, becoming uncontrollable.
Mahiru put the bowl and spoon back in the cupboard, staring straight at Su Qing with an expression that looked like she was about to cry.
"What's wrong? Are you angry?" Su Qing smiled and placed her palm, which had just warmed up a little, on the girl's slightly cool cheek.
He whispered, "Don't cry."
"That kind of thing... is completely impossible!"
Mahiru tilted her head back and began to sniffle violently. Layers of mist appeared densely in her caramel-colored eyes, shimmering with a heartbreaking luster under the incandescent light.
In just a moment, it was completely filled, and the world before my eyes kept shifting between the clear and the blurry.
"Why don't you take better care of yourself? Why don't you eat properly?"
"I've been taking good care of myself, I've been eating properly..."
"Didn't we agree that love isn't everything in life? You were the one who initiated the breakup, so why aren't you taking better care of yourself!"
The girl placed one hand on top of the other hand that was pressed against her cheek. The familiar warmth made Mahiru feel at ease, yet she was also filled with lingering fear.
Her voice suddenly rose, filled with a tearing sob, each word seeming to be dug out from the deepest part of her heart.
"Do you know how worried we were when the doctor told us this? The doctor even said that even someone who hasn't eaten or drunk for days and nights wouldn't be in such a bad condition as you!"
Unable to suppress her longing any longer, Mahiru could no longer bear it. She stopped thinking and tightly embraced the boy she had lost and found.
"What exactly happened while you were gone...?"
"Stop crying, stop crying. If you keep crying, I'll cry with you, and if you wake Yui up, things won't get better."
Su Qing gently soothed the back of Zhen Zhou's head, whispering in her ear in his most tender voice at that moment.
The trembling in her arms seemed to gradually subside, and the heart-wrenching cries turned into suppressed, intermittent sobs.
Mahiru finally lifted her head from his embrace, her face red from crying, her eyes swollen like peaches, and tiny teardrops still clinging to her eyelashes.
Su Qing raised her hand and gently wiped away the tear stains on her face with her fingertips.
The temperature transmitted through my fingertips was scalding hot.
"What is this... How can you comfort someone like this?" Mahiru slightly turned her gaze away, seemingly trying to create the illusion that she hadn't cried.
Then she stared stubbornly at Su Qing, not giving him any chance to escape.
"You haven't answered me yet, please answer properly."
"Why did you leave without permission and then suddenly come back?"
He paused there for a moment, then squatted down.
His eyes, glistening with a misty sheen, shifted from stubbornness to tension and unease, and took on a richer caramel hue.
That was the girl's determination.
"And... are you leaving again this time? If you are leaving, you must tell me."
"What will happen if I tell you?" Su Qing asked.
"I will do everything I can to keep you from leaving," Mahiru said earnestly.
Su Qing: "Including some violent methods?"
“No.” Mahiru shook her head. “I will make you like me even more, so much so that you can’t live without me for the rest of your life.”
Su Qing smiled, and with a gentle pull, the two embraced again.
"The reason I came back is probably because I realized that I can't live without you in this life, so I changed my mind."
"For example, would they starve to death if they didn't eat my food for a day?"
Mahiru's words were originally meant as a joke, but Su Qing's answer was surprisingly serious and didn't seem fake.
He shook his head and said:
“It’s even more serious than that.”
"Yeah, right," Mahiru murmured softly, "You've unknowingly stolen all my cooking skills, it's not that exaggerated..."
“That’s different,” Su Qing said again.
"Smooth-talking," Mahiru muttered, burying her head in her hands.
But in my heart I already believed it.
Su Qing's hand was still gently stroking Mahiru's head.
Even a single strand of hair of your beloved is beautiful.
But when his gaze drifted to Yui, his hands stopped moving again.
Su Qing gently pushed Zhen Zhou away, tilted her head slightly, and looked at him with a somewhat puzzled expression.
She looked at Su Qing, and at the complex and unreadable look in his eyes when he looked at Yui. With her keen mind, she instantly understood what was going on.
The girl didn't question or express any dissatisfaction; she simply took a slight breath.
With those caramel-colored eyes, still glistening with moisture but having regained some clarity, she looked directly at Su Qing and spoke first, her voice soft, yet like a pebble thrown into a calm lake:
"So... what do you plan to do about Yui?"
"About Yui..."
As if afraid that she herself would hear, Su Qing kept her voice very low.
He turned his head away; the cherry blossom-like girl was still sleeping peacefully, only no longer uttering those murmured whispers.
"From the days since I lost you until the last moment at the hotel, I felt that I would never see you again."
Su Qing looked at Mahiru and continued,
"Even when you came to rescue me at the end, I still thought I was deceiving myself, creating a mirage-like illusion out of thin air."
This has already happened once before in Rongcheng...
"Therefore, I am no longer willing to deceive anyone, even though it is unfair to anyone."
He stared straight into Mahiru's eyes, and Mahiru stared back at him.
"Mahiru, I'm a terrible person. I like you, and I like Yui too."
"I cannot accept the absence of any one of you."
Mahiru took a deep breath, composed herself, and asked rationally:
"Hmm... I understand what you mean. You mean you want to be with both of us at the same time and be a scumbag, right?"
Su Qing slowly closed her eyes. "To be precise, it means pursuing both of you at the same time until you agree."
"We've already broken up, haven't we?"
"Hmm...that's right." Mahiru lowered her eyes, but a slight smile appeared on her face under Su Qing's puzzled gaze.
"You did break up with me, that's true." The girl's smile was as sly as ever. "But I don't think I agreed that day, did I?"
what?
Su Qing was stunned, then smiled wryly after realizing what was happening, "How could this be..."
"You shouldn't be like this." Mahiru's voice was weary from crying, yet it carried a stubbornness that shouldn't be there for someone her age.
"You said so much before I even realized what was happening that day, now... isn't it my turn to say it?"
"You speak, I'm listening." Su Qing was puzzled, but he wanted to listen to every word the girl said.
"Qingjun, perhaps what you said that day was right."
"A person shouldn't like two people at the same time. I think that must be wrong and unfair to everyone."
"I always thought we'd known each other for a long time, until you told me that day, and I was only then realizing it."
"It turns out that from the time we met until now, it's only been a semester, a little over three months."
"This amount of time seems to only create a very small ripple in our lives."
"But... if the bonds between people are measured in terms of time."
"Then why is my relationship with my biological parents still like that of strangers?"
Even if we've known each other for a short time in the eyes of outsiders, only we ourselves know how much we've been through, right?
"You hold a place in my heart, and you are far more important to me than anyone else!"
Mahiru's eyes were moist and red, and Su Qing had no idea how heartbroken she had been these past few days.
As a result, her voice had a very heavy nasal tone at that moment.
"So even if someone comes along in the future who only has eyes for me, I won't accept them."
"Because I have already given you my selfless love."
The girl's eyes remained clear and solemn.
"Qing, do you remember what I said?"
"There is light in this world, and there is day; there is day, and there is light."
"Light and day can never be separated."
"Since you have been my light, I will be your day alone."
"Maybe one day in the future, I will become someone I don't even recognize, and I will regret today's decision."
"I have absolutely no regrets at this moment."
"I think there are thousands of roads in this world."
"But I only want to choose the one with you in it."
"So... that's fine, go do what you want to do."
"I've already lost you once with my own hands."
[I should be the one saying that...] Su Qing murmured to herself.
