Chapter 318 Rescue 1
Chapter 318 Rescue 1
Just as Cardi was thinking of some wicked ways to persuade Green, Green led Cardi to the exit leading down to this place.
"Hold on tight, I don't want to soak in this stinking ditch a second time." As soon as Green finished speaking, a grappling hook flew out from the multi-functional arm armor on his right hand and got stuck in the fence.
It was raining heavily outside, and Green could only carry Cardi towards the exit, braving the filthy sewage flowing into the sewers.
"You go out first," Green shouted, ignoring the mouthful of dirty water he had just swallowed.
"...No, I can't exert any strength." Kadi tried to move his body, but found that the wound seemed to have torn open again. He had lost too much blood on and off over the past two days, and he didn't even have the strength to continue moving.
Green gritted his teeth, knowing he couldn't delay any longer. He took a deep breath, mustered all his strength, pushed off the wall with his feet, gripped the grappling hook tightly, and slowly pulled Kadi up until his hands firmly grasped the grille.
"Can you still hold on tight? I'll go out and pull you up."
Rainwater mixed with sewage from the sewers pelted down on him, blurring his vision. Every inch upward was incredibly difficult, and all he could do was ask Kadi behind him, as the force of the water seemed to grow stronger.
"Mmm," Kadi responded weakly, having no strength left.
"Okay, then hold on tight."
Green steadied himself, readjusted his posture, and continued to exert force with both arms, allowing Cardi's hands to grab the iron grille. He then crawled out using both hands and feet to retrieve the grappling hook and pulled Cardi up.
Finally, the two climbed out of the sewer. Green put Cardi on the ground and collapsed to the side, exhausted.
The rain poured down, as if trying to wash away the filth from them.
Green, panting heavily, looked at Cardi, who was curled up beside him, too weak to move. "Now, we need to get to Karina right away."
Kadi nodded, his eyes revealing a hint of determination despite his physical weakness.
Green looked around. The rain came suddenly but also just in time. The torches couldn't burn, and it seemed that the soldiers on patrol tonight had all gone to take shelter from the rain.
Green picked up Cardi from the ground again and headed back the way they came. After all that, it was almost dawn. Karina should still be waiting for them in that secret passage, right?
The rain fell like a curtain, and Green carried Cardi on his back, trudging through the slippery alley. The water rose above their ankles, and muddy sewage kept pouring into their boots.
Cardi's body grew heavier and heavier, and Green could no longer even feel Cardi's body temperature.
The rain gradually subsided, and Green carried Cardi to the secret passage where he and Karina had come together.
"...Miss Karina?"
This secret passage is really not good; a heavy rain almost turned it into a water cave, flooding half of it.
"Miss Karina?" Green called out again, his voice echoing in the dark passage.
However, all that answered him was the sound of water dripping.
Green's heart tightened. Had something happened to Karina? He carefully carried Kadi deeper into the dark passage. The water was up to his calves, and each step required a great deal of effort.
Suddenly, a figure darted out from the corner, and Green instinctively took a half step back, assuming a defensive stance.
"It's me, Green." A familiar voice rang out; it was Karina.
"You're finally back! I thought something had happened to you. The road back was blocked by the rain. How is he?" Karina asked anxiously.
Green breathed a sigh of relief. "He's badly injured. We need to find a place to treat him quickly. He's not dead yet."
Karina nodded. "I've been crouching in the secret passage for a long time and haven't heard any patrols. Come with me, I know a small path nearby, we'll go back through the back door."
Led by Karina, the three of them took a detour through the area, and fortunately, they didn't encounter any patrolling soldiers.
Karina led Green and Cardi through the back door of the brothel into the courtyard and back to Karina's room. She skillfully took out the first-aid kit and prepared to treat Cardi's wounds.
Looking at Cardi again, he realized that he had fallen into a coma at some point. Green could only help change Cardi's soaked clothes, and then he saw that the arrow wound in Cardi's abdomen had long since become infected and ulcerated.
Based on Green's emergency medical experience over the past few years, wounds in this location usually do not involve organs; at most, they may puncture some of the colon and part of the small intestine. The real danger lies in the sepsis caused by such severe ulceration and infection.
Although the arrow was removed in time, the filthy environment of the sewer is full of all kinds of bacteria, so it's no wonder that he got infected. Moreover, since the bacteria entered through the abdominal cavity, it's hard for them not to affect other organs. Now, it's truly beyond saving for Kadi.
Green knew that living in the medieval context, encountering this situation usually meant only one thing: even if you knew how to treat such a wound and how to carry out systemic treatment, there were no drugs or medical equipment to cure you. Knowing more was useless; you could only treat it simply and tough it out.
Those who persevere will live, those who don't will die.
With the infection progressing this far, even if they manage to pull through temporarily, they'll likely develop ascites. Without anti-inflammatory medication and drainage, just trying to tough it out would be worse than death.
Faced with such a wound, not only did Green frown, but Karina also burst into tears instantly, holding the wooden box containing medical supplies, not knowing what to do.
"...In any case, let's get rid of the rotten flesh first."
In the end, Green took the wine and washed the dagger three times. Having participated in battles frequently, these things were already a piece of cake for him.
Perhaps due to his extreme weakness, Kadi only frowned during the removal of the rotten flesh and did not wake up.
In this day and age, where can you find sheep gut sutures? After digging out the rotten flesh, the perforated intestines were exposed, and an unknown brown liquid was oozing out, emitting a foul stench.
"Give me a hand, get me a basin of hot water, and if you have any live, healthy animals, bring them to me right away."
"No problem." Karina couldn't bear to look, wiped away her tears, and hurriedly ran out of the house.
Green also sighed. Cardi's current condition looked like excessive blood loss and septic shock. He could just get some simple treatment, sew him up, and wait to die. He could still spend the last moments of his life in peace.
Karina quickly returned from outside with a basin of hot water and a white rabbit.
Although Green didn't know where Karina had gotten the rabbit from, the situation was urgent, so Green quickly disposed of the rabbit, removing its intestines and tendons. He then cleaned them with water from a basin and processed them into thread, which he then tied to a not-so-thin needle to begin sewing.
Green removed the rotten flesh from the perforated intestines, then sewed them up inside and out with sutures and tendons, leaving only a strip of cloth soaked in alcohol to be used as a drain in the pre-existing wound.
"That's all done. I've done my best. Whether we survive or not is up to fate." Green washed his hands and gestured for Karina to start wiping Kadi's body.
Although this surgery has many flaws from the perspective of the previous life, in this era, people are almost like livestock, so it is already quite good that a similar effect can be achieved.
Let fate decide; as long as I can live a little longer, that's all that matters.
Green didn't want to interrupt their reminiscing; the fact that Cardi's terrifying face hadn't scared Karina away was enough to show how strong their relationship was.
