Chapter 22 The Undead Like a Tide
Chapter 22 The Undead Like a Tide
There were no inhabitants near the outer city wall, only a section of towering wall.
There are stairs at the back that you can climb up.
Ascending the winding steps, standing on the city wall, you can see the desolation outside the ancient capital and the bustling city behind you.
The outside world contrasted sharply with the prosperity of the ancient capital. Everywhere was dilapidated yellow earth. Even in the setting sun, one could still see the trembling of the mounds, as if spirits were about to emerge from them. Night was falling, and their time was coming.
As the sun sets, hands emerge from the earthen graves, densely packed, hands everywhere in sight. Some are dressed in ancient clothes, carrying gold and silver treasures, while others are dressed in modern attire—hunter's clothes, magic association uniforms, and even student clothes.
These people were all mages in life. They died in the Land of the Dead. The recovery of corpses from the Land of the Dead is very difficult. The deathly aura of the Land of the Dead corrodes the bodies of the mages who died there, turning them into new undead. They have no thoughts, only instincts.
The instinct to kill living things.
The undead swarmed in like a tidal wave, crashing against the city walls and causing even the sturdy, unyielding walls to tremble. Their withered, rotting hands continued to strike the walls, sending splattered blood everywhere.
The dead have no sense of pain. Even if their hands are rotten, they will still use their arms to strike each other. If their arms are broken, they will use their heads until they can no longer move and are crushed by other dead.
One after another, the undead stepped over their companions, stretching out to kill the sorcerer on the high wall.
Military mages have always been stationed on the city walls, and people from the Magic Association and the Hunter's Alliance are also frequent visitors. There are also quite a few students from the Ancient Capital Academy. Killing undead can earn you academic credits, and undead crystals are top-quality materials.
Whether for money or for academic credits, they unleash their magic.
Fire and lightning, ice and gales—you can see many kinds of magic here. Undead that try to climb up will be obliterated when they come into contact with the magic, while new undead will continue to climb upwards.
There is no stopping; as long as there are people, there will always be spirits until the sun rises the next day, at which point these spirits will return to their graves to sleep until night falls the following day.
This is their modus operandi, it has always been so, and it has remained unchanged since time immemorial.
"What amazing magic!"
The students present had never seen such a scene before. Countless sparks of magic collided, creating a series of breathtaking sights. The hideous undead were no match for the magical bombardment and could only compensate for their numbers.
They hoped their magic could reach that level, allowing them to easily kill undead.
"Fire-sizzle, burning".
A level one fireball only caused a small spark on the undead, which was extinguished by the wind. It was not only ineffective in killing the undead, but also angered it.
"Roar roar~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"
The undead charge aims to kill the person who mocked them.
"Damn it, how the hell am I supposed to fight this?" Fang Ming yelled, his face grim, as he retreated, his legs trembling. If he hadn't been able to hold onto the person next to him, he would have collapsed to the ground long ago.
Seeing how easily the undead were defeated by magic, he wanted to try it himself; after all, he was a magician and could cast spells.
But how could he know that a single burst of fire wouldn't even break the skin of the undead?
The stark contrast made him almost lose his composure. Was this all the magic he had painstakingly cultivated?
What happened to the promise of a one-hit kill? What happened to the promise of being second only to lightning?
That's not fair.
The students who witnessed it were all shocked and turned pale. The undead were no match for the top-level powerful magic, which made them underestimate the power of the undead. When they finally faced them, they couldn't even break through the skin of the undead.
It's really hard to accept.
Su Ming stood on the city wall, looking at the endless sea of corpses. The undead continued to roam, and some were even several times stronger than ordinary undead, carrying ancient swords and wrapped in cloaks. He brandished his sword, and those undead seemed to have received a summons from their lord, becoming even more reckless.
And this is just the tip of the iceberg. A large number of powerful undead are beginning to awaken, and they are the greatest threat compared to the lower-level undead.
"Any thoughts?" Jiang Shaoxu asked as she approached Su Ming.
Su Ming opened his mouth as if to speak, but in the end he could only sigh helplessly, "You're right, humans are weaker than demons."
The undead were everywhere, their numbers unknown. Looking at them, Su Ming felt his scalp tingle. He had no way to deal with these monsters, and the undead were just the tip of the iceberg of the demons.
Elsewhere, there are all sorts of demons who, like these undead, rampage through humanity.
In ancient capitals, people are always at a disadvantage; what about smaller cities?
Su Ming thought of the Zhoucheng Post Station Commander, who seemed to be a high-level mage, but he was still dead, killed by the demons, Zhoucheng's natural enemy.
What about this ancient capital?
Such a massive undead uprising could not have been without casualties. Su Ming closed his eyes and thought of the mages who had been killed.
I am too weak; I need to become stronger.
"Your magic isn't very effective against these undead, whether it's summoning or spatial magic. I don't recommend you choose the ancient capital; it will limit your potential," Jiang Shaoxu advised.
"You're right."
Seeing that Su Ming seemed to be taking her advice, Jiang Shaoxu continued, "You can go to other universities, whether it's in the capital, Shanghai, or even the military region. You can better utilize your talents there."
"I'm not going."
"What did you say?" Jiang Shaoxu thought she had misheard. "Why did you insist on choosing an ancient capital?"
"Then why did you send me to other places?"
"Isn't the ancient capital good enough? It just has more dead souls, and it's close to home."
Jiang Shaoxu frowned. "What reason do you have to go to the ancient capital? It's definitely not as simple as just being close to home."
Su Ming was silent for a moment, then pointed to the ground behind him. Behind the city wall, mages were fighting with the undead. "Look there, someone has died."
Jiang Shaoxu looked in that direction.
An inexperienced mage underestimated the speed of the undead and overestimated his own magic. The undead remained resilient even after being struck by lightning, and its speed did not decrease despite losing an arm or leg.
Faced with the attack of the undead, the lightning mage was completely unable to resist. The lightning seal he had formed dissipated in fear. He was afraid, and the result of his fear was that he was torn apart by the undead.
There are many people like this, and even the most experienced ones can make mistakes. Here, a mistake means death.
Su Ming's voice remained calm. "See that? That was a lightning mage, a one in a thousand chance. His whole family treasured him, seeing him as a standard for rising to prominence. He came here with lofty ideals, wanting to prove himself. Unfortunately, he couldn't face reality and fell here."
"How many people are like him? I'm just like him. My magic isn't even as strong as lightning. If I were the one left there, I would die too, and my magic would break because of fear."
"I want to help them!"
Beyond the ancient city walls lay the lights of countless homes. Su Ming knew his abilities were limited, and what he could do was insignificant, but he still wanted to stay here. There were demons in the Demon City, and there were demons in the Imperial City; every place had them. But he had only seen the spirits of the dead in the ancient city, and he wanted to stay.
"Whatever, I won't stay in the ancient capital. The mind is useless to the dead. I won't be as foolish as you." Jiang Shaoxu was very angry.
"Whatever you want. I feel this place suits me quite well. When I was a kid, I was invincible in Zhoucheng. Now the opponent has changed, but I believe I can still be invincible in the ancient capital." Su Ming's tone was loud and full of confidence.
"Yes, yes, you're amazing, alright?" Jiang Shaoxu said sarcastically. This person was simply unreasonable. He didn't know what a dimensional mage was thinking, staying in the ancient capital.
"Psychic Control: Virtual Claw!"
Su Ming suddenly shouted, and transparent magical light scattered around him. Seven transparent stars formed a line, and an invisible spatial claw reached towards the edge of the city wall.
A menacing undead was caught by a phantom claw, struggling incessantly, showing faint signs of breaking free.
"Fire Burst!!" The startled mage paused for a moment, then unleashed his most powerful magic, and flames exploded instantly, blasting the undead to smithereens.
"Hoo..." The monk exhaled a breath of stale air; the brush with death had left his legs somewhat numb.
"Thank you." The mage turned around and thanked him, then kept an eye on the city wall to prevent any undead from sneaking up.
Su Ming nodded, casually wiping the sweat from his forehead. Undead are very hostile to spatial magic. Su Ming was certain that his Void Claws could not suppress the undead, and the undead would definitely break free in time.
"Look, I just saved someone." Su Ming smiled cleanly.
It looks great.
Jiang Shaoxu murmured to himself.
