Amidst the rushing water and howling wind and snow, he seemed to hear something else.
The sound was very faint and came from upstream.
It sounded like something... moving quickly through the treetops.
It wasn't the sound of footsteps, but something... lighter, faster, like the sound of branches swaying slightly as a monkey leaps through the forest.
Chu Hang's pupils suddenly contracted.
That "hound"! He didn't walk on the ground! He was fucking moving through the trees!
This thought sent a chill down Chu Hang's spine.
No wonder, no wonder they hadn't heard any pursuing footsteps along the way! This monster wasn't using any conventional tracking methods! He was like a true jungle ghost, moving silently through the treetops above them!
Was he fooled? Maybe.
But he had absolute confidence in his tracking abilities. He might genuinely believe he had misjudged the situation and gone upstream. But what would he do if he couldn't find anyone there?
He would immediately realize that he had been tricked!
Then, he would chase after it downstream along the river as fast as he could!
Chu Hang's heart sank to the bottom.
He had initially thought that jumping into the river would solve everything. Now it seemed they had only temporarily pushed death's scythe away a little.
"Faster! Faster!" Chu Hang roared in his heart as he dragged Gabu downstream, practically tumbling and crawling through the water.
After struggling in the icy river for nearly ten minutes, Chu Hang felt his consciousness beginning to blur. He saw a dense reed bed not far downstream, where the riverbank seemed to form a small depression, which looked like a good hiding place.
That's it!
With his last ounce of strength, he dragged the semi-conscious Gabu ashore, and the two of them collapsed together in the withered reeds.
The thick reeds shielded them from some of the biting cold wind.
Chu Hang lay on the cold, muddy ground, panting heavily, his chest burning with pain. He felt like a piece of pork just pulled out of liquid nitrogen, his entire body stiff and unresponsive.
He dared not rest, and forced himself to sit up to check on Gabu's condition.
Gabe's lips had turned completely purple, his face was as pale as a sheet of paper, his breathing was weak, and his body was trembling violently and uncontrollably.
"Gabe! Hey! Gabe!" Chu Hang slapped his face hard.
Gabe's eyelids twitched a few times, and he barely opened them a crack. His eyes were unfocused, and he was clearly on the verge of hypothermia and shock.
No, if this continues, he will really die.
Chu Hang gritted his teeth, tore off his relatively dry inner lining, and laboriously removed Gabu's soaking wet outer garment. He then rubbed the cloth vigorously against Gabu's body, trying to bring him a little warmth.
After doing all this, he was almost completely exhausted.
He leaned against a clump of reeds, feeling as if his eyelids were filled with lead.
No, I can't sleep.
He pinched his thigh hard, and the intense pain brought him back to his senses a little.
He subconsciously brought up the system interface in his mind.
[Super Photocopier]
[Current number of copies that can be copied: 0]
[Cooldown countdown: 1 day, 16 hours, and 23 minutes...]
There's still a little over a day left...
If he can hold on for just over a day, he will be able to use his copying ability again.
When the time comes, as long as we can find Captain America and copy his abilities... no, that's not right. Captain America himself is surrounded now, and whether he can survive is still a question.
Chu Hang's gaze passed through the sparse reeds and looked towards the distant western ridge.
They should be fighting over there by now.
He could almost hear the faint sounds of gunfire coming from afar.
In my current state, let alone saving anyone, I'd be lucky to even save myself and Gabe's lives.
Must we really hide here like a stray dog, trembling and waiting for our fate to be decided?
Chu Hang's eyes slowly sharpened again.
He's no longer the office worker who could only resign himself to fate.
He possesses the most outstanding physical abilities of this era, and he has the most overpowered cheat code in the world.
He didn't come here to escape.
He came here... to hunt.
He glanced at Gabu, who was almost lifeless beside him, and then at the distant mountain ridge engulfed in gunfire.
An even crazier and bolder idea slowly took root and sprouted in his mind.
He doesn't need to go find Captain America.
He can get Captain America... to come to him.
Chapter 16 Taking a gamble, dragging the captain down with him
Chu Hang felt as if the blood in his body was about to freeze into ice. He leaned against the damp, cold reeds, and with each breath, it felt like swallowing a handful of shards of glass, scraping from his throat all the way to his lungs, burning with pain.
Gabe, standing nearby, was in even worse shape. His trembling, which had initially been intense, had morphed into barely perceptible spasms. Chu Hang knew this wasn't an improvement; it meant his body no longer had the strength to generate heat through trembling. If this continued, Gabe would be a completely lifeless corpse in half an hour at most.
He himself couldn't hold on for much longer.
Self-healing factors are incredibly powerful, but they are not perpetual motion machines; they also require energy. In this extremely low-temperature environment, the meager energy in his body was like an engine leaking oil, rapidly dissipating.
Chu Hang's gaze passed through the swaying reeds and looked towards the distant mountain ridge, its surface flickering in and out of focus with the light of gunfire.
Captain America, Steve Rogers.
That muscular man, wielding a pot-lid shield and hailed as the "embodiment of justice," was now surrounded by Hydra's massive forces, like dumplings being wrapped around a plate. His own situation was probably no better than Chu Hang's.
Hoping he'll come to save you? That's a pipe dream.
What if we didn't let him come to the rescue?
It was as if a bolt of lightning had struck Chu Hang's mind, illuminating the darkness shrouded in coldness and despair.
His brain, which was almost frozen, started working at an unprecedented speed at this moment.
A thought, a thought so crazy that even he himself found it absurd, popped up uncontrollably.
Why should I wait for him to come and save me?
Why can't I drag him down with me?
"Gabe." Chu Hang's voice was a little hoarse. He shook his teammate, who was almost unconscious, with force. "Wake up, listen to me."
Gabe struggled to lift his eyelids a crack, his unfocused gaze devoid of any spirit.
"I... have a plan." Chu Hang leaned close to his ear and said quickly in a voice only the two of them could hear, "A plan that can keep us all alive. But this plan is crazy, so crazy that if we take one wrong step, we will die instantly."
Perhaps it was the words "survive" that spurred Gabe on, for a faint flicker of emotion finally appeared in his eyes.
"You... said..." He used all his strength to squeeze out two words from his throat.
“Listen,” Chu Hang said rapidly, “Right now, all of Hydra’s main forces have been drawn to the western ridge by Captain America. And that damned ‘Hound’ has been tricked into going upstream. This means that the area we are in now is a huge vacuum of manpower! This is our disadvantage, but it is also our greatest advantage!”
"We'll use this vacuum to 'invite' Captain America out of that damned encirclement!"
Gabe's eyes widened suddenly. He didn't seem to understand what Chu Hang meant.
"How should we invite them?" Chu Hang's lips curled into a sinister smile that seemed particularly menacing in the cold night. "Of course, in Hydra's own way!"
He patted the cold metal box in his arms—a radio communicator.
“We just used it to fool ‘The Hound’ once. Now, we’re going to use it to fool them again! But this time, we’re going to fool Hydra’s entire command system!”
Gabe's breathing suddenly quickened. He finally understood what Chu Hang was planning; this plan was a hundred times more insane than the previous feint!
"You...you're going to impersonate a Hydra commander?" Gabe's voice was filled with disbelief and terror.
“That’s right!” A glint of madness flashed in Chu Hang’s eyes. “I’m going to impersonate a high-ranking officer and give the encirclement troops on the western ridge a fake order! An order that they must obey no matter what!”
"I'm going to order them to open a gap in the encirclement on the east side, the line of defense closest to our side of the river! Say that the main Allied force has been spotted to the south and they need urgent reinforcements! That way, Captain America, if he's not stupid, will definitely discover this only breakthrough! He'll desperately try to break out in our direction!"
Gabe was completely stunned by Chu Hang's wildly imaginative plan.
This...this is practically dancing on a knife's edge! And with the highest level of difficulty!
“But…but wouldn’t that expose us too?” Gabe said, trembling. “That ‘Hound,’ and Hydra’s command center, they’ll immediately find out it was you as soon as they check the orders! Then we’ll become everyone’s target!”
“That’s right! We will be exposed!” Chu Hang nodded without hesitation, his eyes becoming unusually firm. “But so what? Gabe, listen carefully, we’re like two people who have fallen into an ice hole. If we sit still, we’ll freeze to death. We want to climb out, but we don’t have the strength. The only way is to pull the strongest guy on the shore down with us! If he falls, the commotion will be bigger, and maybe we can alert everyone else!”
"Captain America, the strongest guy! Once he gets close to us, Hydra's pursuers will follow! Then this place will become a new battlefield! A chaotic battlefield! Only in the chaos will we have a chance! Only then will we have a chance to fish in troubled waters and survive!"
Chu Hang's words were like a shot of adrenaline, piercing Gabu's heart, which was already on the verge of stopping.
Yes, either way, we're going to die.
Rather than freezing to death in this reed marshland in a cowardly and undignified way, it's better to take a gamble and go all out!
If you win the gamble, you survive!
Even if we lose the bet, it's still better than this!
"Okay... let's... let's do it this way!" Gabe gritted his teeth, and a flicker of survival rekindled in his eyes, which had previously lost their luster.
"Very good!" Chu Hang took a deep breath. He knew that from this moment on, there was no turning back.
He switched the communicator's frequency back to Hydra's public command channel.
The cacophony of static and shouts in German instantly flooded in.
"Increase firepower on the west flank! Don't let him break through!"
"Medic! Where's the medic? We have wounded here!"
"Repeat, target is moving eastward along Hill 3! Requesting fire support!"
Listening to the chaos on the channel, Chu Hang knew that Captain America's side had reached the most intense moment of the battle.
