Chapter 28 I'm here to take my driving test

The extraordinary path, [Solo Band], grants greater strength the more instruments one masters. In battle, one can manifest an instrument as a form of energy, unleashing immense power, but at the cost of losing all proficiency in that instrument.

This energy is not holy light, not elements, it requires no prayers, no covenants, and no approval from any deity.

All it requires is a love of music.

The winged girl caught the falling silver leaf from mid-air.

As soon as Yinye's feet touched the ground, she broke free from the winged girl's embrace. She staggered towards Chusheng, tripped over a few steps on a pebble, got up and kept running, tripped again, and when she got up for the third time, her knees were covered in blood.

She ran to Arthur and Chu Sheng, and then burst into tears.

"Chu Sheng! Arthur! Oh my god, there's another wanted criminal!" Tears and snot streamed down her face. "Where's Ella? Why isn't Ella here?"

Chu Sheng opened his mouth, but only let out a hissing sound. Arthur answered for him.

"Ella is safe." Her voice was hoarse. "She's alright."

Yinye paused for a moment, wiped her face haphazardly with the back of her hand, and then continued to cry, but the crying was noticeably softer than before, turning from wailing to sobbing.

Audrey stood up from the dissipating fragments of the flower of flesh.

Then she looked at Arthur, at Chu Sheng, at Yin Ye who was still sobbing and wiping away tears, and at the winged girl sitting on the ground clumsily wiping Yin Ye's face with her right hand.

Her lips moved as if she wanted to say something, but her eyes reddened first.

She bent down and bowed to everyone.

Chu Sheng shakily pulled something out of his pocket and gestured for her to take it.

Audrey took it; it was the winged girl's wallet.

She solemnly handed the wallet back to the winged girl with both hands: "I'm so sorry! I stole your wallet. There must have been something very valuable inside. I'm so sorry!"

The winged girl frantically waved her hands, her ears turning bright red: "No...no! It's just that my flight test permit for the second stage is still inside. I heard that the flight permits obtained by cats are the easiest to get, so I came here to take the test..."

Her voice grew softer and softer until she finally lowered her head, her face flushed with embarrassment.

"No!" Yinye stopped crying as soon as she heard that, and jumped up high. "You dare to take me flying without a license?!"

The winged girl remained silent, lowering her head even further and covering herself with her snow-white wings.

"It's alright." Audrey breathed a sigh of relief. "I can make the decision to let you get your flight license directly in Cat Territory. What you just did has proven that you are fully qualified."

Then everyone remembered that the "new ruler" was dead, so Audrey was naturally the next ruler of the Cat Territory.

"...No wonder they say the Cat Territory's certificate is easy to obtain." Chu Sheng's voice had recovered a bit, and he couldn't wait to complain, "So the Cat Territory was corrupted by monarchs like you."

Audrey remained noncommittal; cat people are naturally lazy and easygoing, and she didn't think it was a sarcastic remark.

She smiled slightly, turned around and walked towards the side door of the Sunlight Hall.

"Where are you going?" Arthur asked.

"The sewers." Audrey didn't turn around. "The kittens are still waiting."

The corridor leading from the Sunlight Hall to the inner side of the Monarch's Palace had collapsed, so Audrey didn't take that route. Instead, she went straight out through the side door and turned into a narrow alley, skillfully bypassing several piles of rubble, a stone pillar that had rolled in from who-knows-where, and two cat-man guards who were crouching on the wall, trembling with their tails covering their eyes.

The monarch's palace in Cat Territory was mostly destroyed in this battle. The Sunlight Hall was completely destroyed, the tower on the east side was tilted like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the connecting corridor on the west side was broken into several pieces. However, the main structure of the monarch's palace was still there. The stone walls and wooden beams, which had been slowly polished by cat-people craftsmen over thousands of years, stood upright with a languid posture unique to the cat-people.

When Audrey walked to the backyard of the mill, she found that the sewer entrance had been opened.

As she descended the steps, dozens of eyes in the depths of the passageway lit up simultaneously.

"My sister's back!"

Little Gray was the first to rush out. She was running so fast that her mouse doll fell out of her arms and landed on the ground, but she didn't bother to pick it up and pounced on Audrey. Behind her, all the cat people ran out from their hiding places.

Then they saw the people behind Audrey.

Chu Sheng was helped down by Arthur. His legs were practically useless, and he slumped limply onto Arthur's shoulders. Arthur wasn't in much better shape; his breastplate was badly dented, and he swayed with every step.

Silver Leaf and the winged girl followed behind, and they seemed to be in good condition.

The person who ran out following the kitten was Ella.

Ella's dog ears perked up the moment she saw Chu Sheng, and her tail started wagging wildly.

"Chu Sheng!"

Looking at the expression on her face—a mixture of worry, grievance, and pride—and at the dizzying curves of her heavy, full chest beneath her linen clothes as she ran, Chu Sheng wanted to say something.

For example, "I'm back," "You did a great job," or "Don't pounce on me, you're too strong."

But he just smiled and gave Ella a thumbs up.

Ella stopped two steps away from him. She saw Chu Sheng's pale and weak face and Arthur's wounds all over his body.

Her eyes reddened, but she didn't cry. She bent down, gently nuzzled Chu Sheng's forehead with her nose, and then turned around to proudly show off to the group of cat people.

"Look! I told you! Big brother and Sister Audrey went to buy grilled fish! Now they're back!"

Little Grey peeked out from beside Audrey's legs, looked at Chu Sheng, and then looked at Audrey.

"But...they didn't bring back any grilled fish."

Ella was a little embarrassed, but she immediately came up with an excuse: "Because the Grilled Fish King is too big! It takes everyone to go up and move it!"

"Really?" Several cat-like creatures crowded around, sniffing intently with their little noses, trying to detect the aroma of the grilled fish.

"Really!" Ella nodded vigorously, her tail wagging guiltily in a figure-eight pattern behind her. "Tomorrow, we'll go move it together tomorrow!"

After saying that, she turned her head furtively and whispered in Audrey's ear, "Does Cat Cat have a grilled fish as big as a mountain? It must have one, right?"

Audrey smiled, squatted down, and hugged Little Grey, resting her chin on Little Grey's fluffy head.

Her eyes were bright, like ocean waves illuminated by the rising sun.

"It's true," she said. Her voice was soft but firm. "Tomorrow, we'll all go up there."

"No." Ella's eyes widened, and drool instantly streamed down her face. "I was just saying, is it true?"
