This time it's the winged people.
Three or four winged people were squatting by the roadside repairing a truck with a broken wheel. Their wings were different colors, some grayish-brown, some pure white, and one had beautiful red feathers on its wing.
The winged man with red wings was the first to notice the approaching carriage.
He looked up and waved to Arthur at the front of the car, calling out, "Hey! Sir, do you have any useful tools I can borrow?"
""
Chu Sheng leaned out of the car window and glanced at the truck that was overturned on the side of the road.
"We're not blacksmiths, we don't have wrenches," he said truthfully.
The winged man wasn't disappointed. He chuckled twice and said, "It's alright, it's alright. A caravan will be passing by later, and I'll borrow it from them. This old car has been with me for seven or eight years. It always breaks down on long trips, but I'm used to it."
His companion next to him slapped him with his wing: "Couldn't you have fixed it before you hit the road?"
The winged people started bickering. Chu Sheng turned his head back and found Ella staring at the winged people with longing eyes.
"You want to fly?" Chu Sheng could tell.
Ella nodded vigorously: "Ella wants to fly! To fly with Chu Sheng on her back!"
"You should learn to walk first," Silver Leaf retorted. "I wonder who got their tail stepped on by Pegasus."
""
The carriage continued forward, and the variety of species on the grassland grew increasingly rich. A group of gray-skinned lizards with scales on their backs were crossing the road in a line. They glanced at the carriage with their vertical pupils, then slowly continued crawling. In the distance, on a low hill, a huge marmot was basking in the sun on a rock, lazily scratching its rear end.
Chu Sheng couldn't help but exclaim, "This Tianma Territory is practically a wildlife park!"
"The grassland ecosystem of Pegasus Territory is very suitable for the coexistence of multiple races," Arthur explained. "Especially around Whitewing City, you can see almost all intelligent beings from non-undead races in the northern border of the Empire."
As the carriage crossed a shallow beach, Ella suddenly pointed into the distance and shouted, "Chusheng! There's a village over there! It's full of winged people!"
""
Chu Sheng looked in the direction she pointed.
Dozens of low houses are built on a cliff, each with a small platform in front of it. Colorful fabrics and strings of dried fruit are hung on the wooden railings along the edge of the platform.
Several winged children were chasing and playing on the edge of a cliff. They spread their wings and jumped off the cliff. Just before they landed, they suddenly spread their wings and used the air currents to glide away, circled around, and flew back.
The youngest winged child was probably not very skilled, and when he landed, he was too fast and crashed headfirst into a haystack below the cliff.
"Winged people's villages are usually built on cliffs or high ground for easy takeoff and landing." Arthur deliberately slowed down the car so that Ella and Ambermind could take a closer look. "They make a living by hunting, gathering, and beekeeping. Winged people's honey is the most expensive honey in the empire. Add to that catnip from Cat Territory and honey vines from the Sacred Tree Forest, and these three things mixed together to make tea can fetch an astronomical price."
"How expensive can it be?" Chu Sheng asked curiously.
"A small jar of Winged Human honey costs about two silver coins in Pegasus Territory. The price increases fivefold when transported to the center of the Empire, and twentyfold when transported to the southern coast of the Empire. If you can transport it to the capital of the Dwarf Kingdom, a small jar can be exchanged for an exquisite short sword."
Chu Sheng gasped, "Damn it, I should have stocked up on more catnip at CatNuts."
Silverleaf suddenly interjected, "After the Sacred Tree Trade Market opens, will Moonlight Fruit and Stardew Berry from the Gray Domain also be available for sale?"
"Of course," Arthur nodded. "The specialties of the Gray Domain are always in short supply in the Empire. It's just that there weren't any formal trade channels before, so we could only wait for the Gray Elves to carry them out and sell them themselves. Once the trade market is established, the prices will definitely go up."
Silver Leaf's pointed ears stood up, and its eyes sparkled.
The afternoon sun shone on the grassland, baking the entire land warmly.
A post station appeared by the roadside, with a wooden sign hanging at the entrance, bearing the words "Tianma Post Station, half a day from Baiyi City" in crooked handwriting.
As Chu Sheng looked at those words, a strange feeling suddenly welled up in his heart.
This was the first time he had come so close to "civilization" since he came into this world.
Windmill Village is a remote border village, Cat Territory is an autonomous territory of demi-humans, and Sacred Tree Forest is a hidden elven royal court; all of them are on the fringes of human society.
But Tianma Territory is different; it is a pure and legitimate imperial civilization!
"We're almost there," Arthur's voice came from the front of the carriage. "We'll spend the night in Whitewing City. Tomorrow morning, we'll visit Lady Mira at the Lord's manor."
Chu Sheng leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes to rest.
The grasslands were gradually replaced by fields of wheat, and occasionally a few centaurs could be seen working in the fields; further away, the outline of a giant city with gray and white walls gradually emerged from the horizon.
White Wing City.
Before Chu Sheng could even get a clear look at the city gate, a whooshing sound suddenly came from above. He looked up and saw a winged person gliding low over the carriage.
The winged man carried a letter bag and flew very fast, disappearing in the direction of Whitewing City in the blink of an eye.
"Messengers from Pegasus Territory," Arthur explained. "The winged people fly much faster than horses, and they are the ones who deliver important letters."
Chu Sheng nodded thoughtfully: "Did you report the attack we were attacked at the post station?"
"It was sent that very evening," Arthur said. "I wrote a brief report on the events and had the messenger deliver it to the Imperial Knights for their records."
"That's really efficient." Chu Sheng gave a thumbs up.
"This is the duty of the Imperial Knights." Arthur's ahoge (cowlick) stood up straight.
Whitewing City is a city built on an open plain, with walls constructed from solid blocks of grayish-white granite. Every few dozen steps along the walls stands an arrow tower, its tops covered with dark blue glazed tiles, its eaves upturned, and copper bells hanging beneath them, tinkling in the wind.
A long queue stretched out at the city gate. Arthur skipped the queue; she drove closer to the gate, pulled out the insignia of the Imperial Knights from her pocket, and flashed it in front of the guards.
The guard, clad in silver light armor with a pegasus collar and white plumes, immediately straightened up, placed his right fist on his left chest, and saluted: "Sir Knight! Please wait a moment, I will immediately inform the lord's manor!"
"No need." Arthur put away the badge. "Let's find a hotel first, and visit the lady tomorrow morning. There's no need to make a fuss."
"Yes, sir!" The guard stepped aside to make way, winking at his adjutant behind him. "Take care, sir!"
When the lieutenant saw Arthur's carriage enter the city gate, he turned and ran wildly toward the castle.
The streets of Whitewing City are much wider than those of Cat Territory. Most of the buildings on both sides are three or four-story brick and wood structures, with shops on the first floor and people living on the second floor and above.
The shop signs were all over the place, some selling cloth, some selling spices, some selling weapons, and some selling herbs. There was also an auction house with its doors tightly closed, with a banner hanging at the entrance that read: "Closed today, preview of the annual auction tomorrow."
The streets were bustling with people, mostly humans, but you could also see many other races.
Ella was lying by the car window, her tail wagging wildly, her eyes darting around.
"Chu Sheng!" She turned her head sharply, pointing to a stall on the side of the street, "That one!"
Chu Sheng looked in the direction she pointed. It was a barbecue stall, with large chunks of meat skewered on iron sticks, grilling them until golden brown and glistening with oil over charcoal.
"Honey-grilled skewers," Arthur glanced at them. "A specialty of Pegasus Territory. Horned lamb marinated in winged honey, grilled until crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, then brushed with a sweet and spicy sauce."
Three swallowing sounds were heard in the carriage.
One voice came from Ella, one from Silverleaf, and one from Chusheng.
Arthur sighed helplessly, "Let's find a hotel to settle down first, and then come back to buy it tonight."
The carriage turned into a quiet side road lined with tall plane trees. The shops on both sides were not so noisy, mostly bookstores, art galleries, tailor shops, and a music store with an elegant storefront.
Yinye saw the sign for the music store: "That store! Can I go take a look?"
"Tomorrow," Arthur said firmly. "Let's settle things today."
Yinye glanced at the music store window again, unwilling to give up. Inside was a beautifully crafted guitar; Chu Sheng looked at it and thought it was just a guitar.
The carriage stopped in front of a three-story building.
White Wing Inn.
