Chapter 1233 - 738: The Unlucky Doctor Daoter (Part 2)
A few of the people who used to be the backbone have taken unpaid leave and gone to work with private troupes. Take me for example; if it weren’t for my mom being relatives with Yao Wen Yuan, I’d probably have left a long time ago.
Staying here, the future’s laid out in front, clear as day. If it weren’t absolutely necessary, who would want to muddle through life like this?
Even though everyone pretends to be indifferent, deep down, only they know how they truly feel.
"At least it’s a secure government job."
The driver, Liu Yulong, chimed in.
"What good does that do?" Liu Yumei sighed heavily. "Last year during New Year, Li Fengfeng and Yao Gangxing came over to play, and you were there. Look at their demeanor and tone; if it weren’t for the years of friendship from school, I would have kicked them out."
"Ten years east, ten years west; who knows who’ll be on top in the future? Anyway, I think a government job is good. Having a sister like you makes me proud.
Even though I’m making more money driving deliveries, people still look down on it. Unlike your job, it sounds respectable."
"Is it really respectable?" Luo Ye questioned, "Whenever your people mention working at the Cultural Troupe, there’s always a hint of emotion, right?"
"My sister’s different; Auntie is related to the leaders in the troupe, she won’t get mistreated. Everyone knows that." Liu Yulong explained.
"Brother, keep talking nonsense and I’ll ignore you." Liu Yumei glared at Liu Yulong. "Luoluo’s generous. Anyone else would’ve been upset with you."
"Luo Family’s girl, don’t be mad; I wasn’t talking about you. You and Xiao Zhao came here clean, we all know that." Liu Yulong quickly clarified.
"It’s fine. Brother Liu is speaking the truth. I won’t be angry." Luo Ye waved it off and continued to sort the program list with Liu Yumei.
There are nineteen people available in the Cultural Troupe, and the programs have been set. The challenge is the order of appearance; Luo Ye isn’t familiar with the members, so Liu Yumei detailed each one. It was only as they approached Taomen City that they finished sorting the list.
Packing the files into her bag, Luo Ye smiled at Liu Yumei meaningfully, making the latter uneasy. She cleared her throat: "Luoluo, sorry, I didn’t mean to act this way. Don’t worry; if anything happens, I’ll handle it myself."
Liu Yulong turned back to look at his sister, confused, "Watch out!" Luo Ye leaned forward in alarm, quickly grabbing Liu Yulong’s steering wheel and sharply turning it, narrowly avoiding a shadowy object. Liu Yulong and Liu Yumei broke out in a cold sweat.
"Brake! Step on the brake!" Luo Ye urgently instructed the stunned Liu Yulong. No matter how capable, she couldn’t reach the brakes.
Once the car stopped, Liu Yumei patted her chest to calm her nerves: "Was that a person or what?"
"A person, pushing a cart." Luo Ye said, quickly exiting the vehicle. It was clear that the person with the cart was scared too, standing dazed without moving.
"Who pushes a cart on the road at midnight? This place is deserted; you’d think it was haunted..." Liu Yumei mumbled as she followed him out.
"Are you okay?" Luo Ye couldn’t see the man’s age in the dark, so she addressed him respectfully.
"Fine." The man replied hoarsely, starting to push his cart again.
Just as Luo Ye turned to get back into the car, she noticed something shining silver on the cart. She hurriedly stopped the man: "Wait a minute!"
"Wha... what do you want?" The man’s voice trembled slightly.
Taking advantage of the faint light, Luo Ye saw the man was in his thirties, a bit thin, and not very tall. She advised, "Brother, I think we might have bumped you. Check carefully to avoid regrets later. And the items on your cart, make sure they’re not damaged. We’re responsible people."
"No, you can go." The man answered quickly.
"Really?" Luo Ye said as she turned, but suddenly stumbled, falling towards the cart. She reached out to steady herself but ended up toppling the one-wheel cart, falling heavily onto it.
"Luoluo, Luoluo..." Liu Yumei rushed over, gently checking her, "Are you hurt anywhere? Can I lift you up?"
"I’m fine, just bumped my back a little. I’ll try to get up slowly." Luo Ye said as she slowly got up, her hand naturally not idle.
