Chapter 28 Selling Dried Fruit
Chapter 28 Selling Dried Fruit
Lin Yan glanced at the person who spoke. She didn't recognize her, but the woman's gaze towards her was unfriendly, full of contempt and mockery.
"Hey Lin Yan, I heard your family separated from the second branch? How's it going? Are you still managing to get by? Hahahaha."
Uncle Li glanced at her and said, "Chen Fang! How can you talk like that? This is someone else's business, what right do you have to comment?"
"Chen Fang? I don't know her? Why is she so hostile!" Lin Yan wondered to herself. She didn't know this person either, and her name was unfamiliar. She didn't seem to have heard of her before. She didn't know why she was so hostile towards the two siblings.
"How my family is doing is none of your concern, Auntie!" Lin Yan retorted.
"I'm just a helpful person! Hey, I know your dad, I'm just checking to see if you're having any trouble!" Chen Fang sneered, her tone sarcastic.
"There are difficulties, Auntie! Lots of them." Lin Yan smiled sweetly at Chen Fang. "We currently live in a thatched hut, and it's quite cramped for four people. We'd like to build a house. Auntie, do you know my father? Could you help us? We don't need to contribute everything, just a few taels."
"My father is too embarrassed to ask for help, but I didn't expect you to be so kind and willing to help us!"
"Do you know any other kind-hearted people like you, willing to help others?"
Chen Fang was speechless after Lin Yan's barrage of questions. "Who wants to pay for you! What nonsense are you talking about!"
"If you're not going to pay money, are you going to offer labor or supplies?" Lin Yan asked, her face full of questions.
Chen Fang looked resistant but didn't dare to shout. She warned Lin Yan in a low voice, "Don't talk nonsense!"
"Neither?! Then why did you ask! You made me happy for nothing. I thought Auntie was genuinely trying to help us! I bet she just wanted to see us make a fool of ourselves." Lin Yan looked dejected and sighed, "Oh well, there are always people in this world who enjoy seeing others suffer. They have no good intentions and find pleasure in other people's pain."
"What...what nonsense are you spouting? When did I ever say I was going to help you!"
"Then why are you asking? Don't ask questions if you can't help others suffer!"
"Hey, you sharp-tongued brat, did you learn that from your mother?" Chen Fang was utterly exasperated. After being bombarded with insults by Lin Yan, she forgot all about making fun of them.
"What does this have to do with my mother?" This guy knows not only my father but also my mother, but I have no recollection of them at all. Obviously, Lin Yu doesn't know them either. When did this guy become enemies with my parents?
"Pfft." A laugh came from beside me.
Another aunt sitting in the car looked at Chen Fang with amusement, "She's just jealous of your mother."
"Ge Chunyue! Shut up!" Chen Fang said in a panic, quickly stopping her from speaking.
"What?" Lin Yan raised an eyebrow and looked at Lin Yu, who was also completely bewildered.
Ge Chunyue chuckled, “Lin Hai used to learn carpentry and earned a lot of money. He was also good-looking, so he was very popular when it came to finding a wife. She liked your father and even asked a matchmaker to arrange a meeting, but unfortunately, she didn’t like him. Lin Hai took a fancy to Zheng Yun, who was from the same village as her.”
"Wow!" Lin Yan exclaimed inwardly: So that's why they don't like me and A Yu.
"Shut up and stop talking nonsense!" Chen Fang felt embarrassed when someone brought up the past.
"Hmph, I'm talking nonsense. Back then, everyone in Daozhuang Village knew about this! Besides, it's been more than ten years now. Everyone has married and their children are all grown up. Nobody mentions this anymore. Only you are still clinging to it. You used to be sarcastic towards Lin Hai and Zheng Yun, and now you're being sarcastic towards their children. I don't know what business it is of yours!" Ge Chunyue looked down on Chen Fang's behavior.
Chen Fang had no idea that someone knew the inside story. Having her secret exposed, she sat dejectedly by the cart, saying nothing.
Seeing this, Ge Chunyue rolled her eyes and said nothing more.
Lin Yan and Lin Yu quickly got into the car, and soon a few more people got on, also going to town.
Uncle Li would pull his donkey cart back and forth to town, charging three coins per person. However, he kept refusing Lin Yan's fare, refusing to accept it no matter what. Lin Yan had no choice but to give up and took out a box of dried fruit for Uncle Li. This was prepared in advance for Li Xiaocao, and it was packed in a wooden box made by Lin's father. She asked Uncle Li to take it back with him.
When they arrived in town, Lin Yan first bought two bundles of oil paper and thin hemp rope to wrap dried fruit. She then chose a spot on the street where many stalls were gathered and laid out a large piece of oil paper.
Then they put down their baskets and started packing with Lin Yu, each pack weighing half a pound.
Once some were packed, Lin Yan started hawking, "Dried peaches and dried apricots, they're sweet and sour and super delicious! You can sample them for free! Buy only if you like them!"
The street vendors were all aware of the business, and as soon as they heard about something new, people would immediately gather around and ask, "Little girl, what are you selling?"
"Dried peaches and dried apricots! You can try some!" he said, taking out some loose pieces for people to sample.
"Mmm, it's sour, a little sweet, and quite chewy!"
"It's delicious. The taste is different from eating fruit directly."
"I've dried apricots myself before, but they're not as good as these; they're sour and hard. How did you make these?"
"Hey! They're selling it out there, can I tell you what to do?"
Lin Yan smiled and replied, "This has sugar added, so it's sweet and sour. If you just sun-dry it, it will definitely turn sour!"
"Ah, so it has sugar added. This sugar is expensive!" the man exclaimed.
"Hey, give me a pack!" an auntie eagerly stepped forward. "I want a pack of dried apricots! How much?"
"Twenty coins a pack!" Lin Yan replied, then handed her a pack of dried apricots. "Ayu, you take the money!"
"Okay, sis!" Lin Yu replied happily, not expecting that it would actually be sold.
The crowd grew larger and larger. Twenty coins was not expensive to buy a bag of dried fruit at the market. Those who found it delicious bought it, and some wealthy families bought ten bags at a time.
Lin Yan and Lin Yu only stayed for one morning, and the more than one hundred bags of dried fruit in the basket were all sold out.
Lin Yu stared at the basket overflowing with copper coins, rubbing his eyes in disbelief. "Sister, we've made so much money!"
"Hmm, that's more than two taels of silver!" Lin Yan calculated the number sold today.
"Two taels of silver! Wouldn't we make a fortune selling this!"
"That has to be in season! Peaches and apricots only ripen during this period. Even if I can get the trees to bear fruit after the season, it's fine for us to make some for ourselves, but if we sell a lot to others, it will definitely attract attention."
"Yes, yes, yes, then we'll only sell it for this period of time. What if someone discovers that you have spiritual power and it's bad for you?" Lin Yu understood Lin Yan's words and realized the problem. If someone with ill intentions noticed his sister's peculiarity, wouldn't that bring trouble upon himself?
"We've sold everything and made some money, so let's spend it!" Lin Yan shook the copper coins in the basket, making a clattering sound.
"You just earned it, and you're already spending it?!"
"Isn't money meant to be spent? I'll take you shopping today!" Lin Yan happily pulled Lin Yu along.
