Chapter 80 The Yamanaka Family Flower Shop
Chapter 80 The Yamanaka Family Flower Shop
The setting sun bathed the streets of Konoha in a warm orange hue.
In front of the police headquarters building, Minato Namikaze had just finished a day of inspection work. He took off his hat, which bore the police department emblem, tidied his slightly messy blond hair, and casually drew a perfect checkmark on his duty roster.
"Thank you for your hard work, Watergate advisor!"
His current position is head of the inspection team, but he also holds the title of special advisor, so members of the police department continue to call him advisor; head of the team sounds too serious.
The ordinary Uchiha clansmen standing guard at the gate straightened their backs. Now, even when facing commoner ninjas, they could greet them with utmost naturalness—a good habit they had developed after being punished by selling pancakes for three days.
"You've worked hard. Remember to grab something to eat after your shift ends."
Minato responded with a smile, a smile that looked especially warm in the setting sun, healing many of the female ninjas passing by.
Just as he was about to head home, a series of hurried footsteps, accompanied by a familiar chakra fluctuation, came from the direction of the village entrance.
Minato stopped in his tracks, and the smile on his lips unconsciously deepened.
In the crowded flow of people, a bright red color burst into view like a leaping flame.
Kushina Uzumaki carried a huge scroll on her back, looking travel-worn, her headband tied askew on her forehead, and her face still covered in dust from her mission, but her eyes shone with an astonishing brightness.
"Watergate!"
Kushina waved from a distance, completely ignoring the stares of those around her, and strode over.
"Is the mission over?" Minato went up to her and naturally reached out to help her catch the heavy-looking scroll.
"No need, no need, this little bit of weight is nothing!"
Kushina dodged to the side, patted her chest, and said nonchalantly, "I just caught a porcupine, but unfortunately Grandma Mito's teeth aren't good, so I'll have to eat it myself. But I also caught a big fish for Grandma Mito; it should taste good in soup."
But soon, her expression changed slightly, and her previously high spirits instantly dropped a bit.
She glanced out of the corner of her eye at the rooftops and the shadows of the utility poles not far behind her.
There, several faint, lurking presences clung to her like maggots; these were the secret agents responsible for monitoring her.
"It's those tagalongs again..." Kushina bit her lip and muttered in a low voice, "Even though the mission is over, I still get stared at when I'm just going shopping. It's so annoying."
Although the surveillance by the undercover agents has lessened somewhat recently, the feeling of being watched in public still makes her feel uneasy.
Minato followed her gaze, his eyes narrowed slightly, then returned to their gentle expression.
"Kushina."
"Um?"
"Want to... play a game?"
Minato suddenly moved closer, a rare glint of cunning flashing in his azure eyes.
Kushina froze, staring at the handsome face so close to hers, her heart skipping a beat: "W-What game?"
"hide and seek."
Minato extended his hand, palm up, in an inviting gesture.
"As long as we shake them off, we'll win."
Kushina's eyes instantly turned into crescent shapes, a sign of the excitement of a successful prank.
"Alright! The loser buys ramen!"
Before she could finish speaking, Kushina suddenly placed her hand on Minato's palm.
"Hurry up."
Minato whispered.
next second.
Whoosh!
There were no hand seals, and no smoke.
Only a golden flash disappeared in the setting sun.
On a nearby utility pole, two masked ANBU ninjas saw only a blur before their eyes.
Where are they?!
"In that direction! Chase after them!"
"No...it's too fast! Is that the Body Flicker Technique? How can there be such a fast Body Flicker Technique?!"
The secret agents frantically leaped across the rooftops, trying to find that red trail.
However, conventional tracking methods were completely ineffective against Minato Namikaze's Body Flicker Technique, which had been improved by Nishikawa Tetsu using scientific theory and honed through countless battles.
However, Minato still kindly left them a note.
"I'll take Kushina home later. Thank you for leaving get off work early."
……
Three minutes later.
In a quiet alley in Konoha.
Minato and Kushina leaned against the wall, their chests rising and falling slightly from their rapid run.
"Haha...hahaha!"
Kushina covered her mouth, her shoulders shaking with laughter. "Did you see the expressions on those two ANBU members' faces? They looked like headless flies, so funny."
Minato leaned against the wall and chuckled softly, looking at Kushina's flowing hair and flushed cheeks with a gentle gaze like a pool of spring water.
"We are free for now."
"Yes! I'm free!"
Kushina took a deep breath of the air where she wasn't being watched, and felt as if she had come back to life.
She turned to look at Minato and suddenly realized that this usually gentle and mild-mannered boy was actually quite handsome when he carried her at breakneck speed.
"Um... now that we've shaken them off, where are we going?" Kushina turned her head away somewhat awkwardly.
"How about we go check that out?" Minato pointed to the opposite side of the alley.
There was a wooden sign hanging there—[Mountain Flower Shop]
"Buying flowers?" Kushina blinked. "For whom?"
"For Lord Mito," Minato explained, "didn't you bring back fish? If you add a bouquet of flowers, the old man will be even happier."
"Okay!" Kushina thought about it and realized that it was indeed true.
The two walked out of the alley and pushed open the glass door of the flower shop.
Ring ring.
The clear sound of wind chimes rang out.
The flower shop was filled with a faint fragrance of flowers, and colorful blooms competed for attention on the shelves.
Behind the counter, a young man with a long golden ponytail was carefully trimming a pot of lilies with scissors.
Hearing the noise, he looked up and revealed a gentle smile.
"Welcome... Oh, isn't this Busyman and Red Pepper from the Police Department?"
Kushina's name was well-known among the ninja academy students, and many boys in the academy had been beaten by her.
Yamanaka Inoichi put down his scissors: "What brings you two here today?"
He was off work today, but his family had just called him in to watch the shop. However, he also really enjoys being around flowers.
"Don't give me nicknames in the mountains!" Kushina waved her fist.
"This isn't a nickname I gave you!"
"We're here to buy flowers," Minato said with a smile, trying to smooth things over. "They're for our elders. Any recommendations?"
"Elders..."
Haiyi stroked his chin, his gaze sweeping over the two of them before finally pulling a bunch of elegant carnations from the flower bucket behind him, along with a few sprigs of baby's breath.
"This is the most suitable gift for elders, as it symbolizes respect and affection."
"This is nice." Kushina really liked this elegant bouquet, and the meaning was also very fitting.
While skillfully packing the items, Haiyi casually remarked, "By the way, Lu Jiu was just complaining to me that the police department has so many documents lately that they're burying him. He wanted to settle scores with that kid Che, but then he discovered that Che is missing too. Do you guys know where that guy went?"
"Him..." Minato thought of Nishikawa Tetsu's recent mysterious movements, "He's probably doing scientific research in some lab."
"What a strange person." Inoichi shook his head and handed the wrapped bouquet to Minato.
"How much?" Minato reached for his wallet.
"No need, consider it a gift from me." Hai Yi waved his hand. "Last time, the assistant administrators helped my flower shop find a batch of lost seedlings, and I haven't thanked you yet."
"That won't do..."
"Take it." Kushina stepped forward and took the bouquet, not understanding this act of refusing.
"Two grown men dawdling."
"Thank you, Yamanaka."
Minato and Inoichi exchanged a glance. Inoichi saw the apology in Minato's eyes, but he shrugged, indicating that he didn't mind, since it was meant to be given to the two of them anyway.
The two walked out of the flower shop.
The streetlights were already on, casting long, overlapping shadows of the two people.
Kushina, carrying the flowers, walked ahead with light steps.
Minato followed half a step behind, always maintaining a protective stance.
"Hey, Minato!"
Kushina suddenly stopped, turned around, put her hands behind her back, and tilted her head to look at him.
"Um?"
Kushina looked down at the flowers in her arms, her voice softening slightly:
"It's nice to know you."
In this village filled with surveillance and malice, besides Grandma Mito, only Minato never treated her as a freak or a tool, but as a friend. He was her only friend.
Minato paused for a moment, then revealed that unique smile that drew the attention of countless people—a smile that belonged only to the Little Sun.
He stepped forward and gently plucked a leaf from Kushina's hair.
"I will always be here."
Kushina felt her cheeks burning, and she turned away hastily to hide her embarrassment.
"Let's go, let's go back and check on Grandma Mito. If we're late, the fish won't be fresh!"
Watching the girl's panicked retreating figure, Minato's smile deepened.
