Chapter 898 Whether rich or poor, the Zhang family lives...
Chapter 898 Whether you're rich or poor, go home.
When Peter arrived at the Spiderweb base, he found himself to be the last one there; everyone else had already arrived. Under the Christmas tree, besides the gifts he had given to everyone, there were also some other small gifts.
Everyone was gathered in small groups chatting. The colorful lights and other decorations were all installed, but they seemed insignificant compared to the enormous size of the base itself. However, the new Spider Web base was actually a modified version of Hydra's old base. It wasn't Peter's fault that Hydra built the base so big.
Scientists Connors and Jonathan were discussing something when Peter saw them and went to greet them: "Good evening, doctors. What are you discussing?"
"We are discussing your previous medical examination results. Since you returned from the East and mastered that 'qi' thing, your DNA mutation has intensified."
Jonathan said with a worried expression, "To be honest, Spider-Man, there are too many unexpected factors in your life. Now your DNA is very different from that of humans."
Peter: ————
"I guess this isn't good news?"
"Actually, this is confusing news. Your genes are in an unstable state, a state that is, how should I put it—craving evolution."
Connors picked up the thread: "I've never seen such an active cell before. It's like it's trying to demonstrate its evolutionary potential. I'm not sure what you'll evolve into next."
"I feel like I've seen this script somewhere before." Peter raised an eyebrow and then remembered: "Right, after I was bitten by a spider from another universe for the first time, we could have relied on the gene-editing device—oh no."
Peter suddenly remembered that one of the gene editing machines had been destroyed by the X-Men, and the other had been stolen from Magneto by Mr. Ominous and was still missing.
But seeing the bewildered looks on Connors and Jonathan's faces, Peter realized: "I misspoke, didn't I?"
"Your genes are trying to evolve, Spider-Man, or more accurately, adapt to the environment, and that's what scares us. Organisms only evolve to adapt to new environments when they undergo drastic changes." Connors' expression was serious. "In other words, your genes have sensed something and are trying to adapt to the new environment through evolution."
"What new environment? The next mass extinction? Oh, that's just a joke."
Peter had no idea what the two scientists were talking about, and his spider-sense wasn't reacting at all, so he didn't think anything was wrong. Peter watched Lightning go to chat with Harry and the others, then walk over to Cindy. Cindy was sitting in a corner drinking juice, as quiet as ever, but something seemed off.
Are you feeling unwell?
"No, it's nothing, I'm just a little tired—"
Peter initially thought that the Spider-Magic side had been attacked again, but Cindy didn't seem to be in that much danger. Then he remembered that Cindy had also been feeling a bit unwell in the Ultimate Spider-Man universe.
Even now, he still doesn't understand what dangers that universe holds.
"If you're not feeling well, I can take you home first. There's no need to force yourself."
Cindy shook her head again, and Peter breathed a sigh of relief. He turned around and saw that everyone was there, but then he suddenly realized that unlike the Christmas parties he had attended before, these people were here for him, because of him, so he felt he should say something.
But what should he say?
"Okay, everyone, um—" Peter paused for a moment, and everyone looked at him. Then Peter said somewhat shyly, "I'm very happy to have gathered so many people here. I'm not sure if this is the right time to say this, but—what makes me happiest is that no matter what enemy I face, or what the circumstances, I'm sure there are people who will stand with me or support me from behind."
"I really like the name Amazing Spiderman. Some people call me that, and maybe the reason I have that name is because I have a group of amazing friends, you guys. Have fun."
Then came the cheers. Gwen even planned to play the drums to celebrate, but there wasn't one, so she had to give up. All everyone did there was eat, drink, chat, and open their Christmas presents.
Peter found his gift, which was written on it: "Smart Kid." It must have been from Gwen. The gift was a pair of glasses that Peter no longer needed, but the prescription was the same as the ones he wore in middle school.
Or perhaps it's just the same pair of glasses.
Cindy gave her a scarf, which, without a doubt, was woven from "spider silk," her unique ability.
Harry gave Peter a Lego set, while Amadeus gave Peter something he couldn't understand; it seemed to be something like an electronic lock unlocker. Apart from that, everyone else gave Peter more ordinary gifts.
Peter also prepared gifts for everyone, as he knew his friends best and would never forget them.
As time ticked by, Peter was nearing the end of his preparations. Everyone naturally went home, and Peter planned to take Cindy home first, then do one last patrol, before heading home to have his final Christmas meal with Aunt May and the others. Gwen could go home first; after all, her identity was still a secret from Aunt May and Uncle Ben, so they would have to go home separately.
Peter was completely unaware that there were additional guests at the Christmas party. Or rather, no one knew that he was a guest.
The Beyonder sat in a corner of the Spider-Man base, on a sofa he had created himself, watching this scene. The more he learned, the more he realized that the Spider-Man of Earth 616 was extraordinary. Having witnessed this, he felt he needed to make some special arrangements for the 616 universe.
He had originally planned two teams for Earth-616: one team of heroes led by Spider-Man, and one team of villains led by Doctor Doom. But now, he has decided to have Iron Man lead the team.
Spider-Man can also select additional teammates from across the multiverse to form an extra team to compete.
"Let's announce this good news to the universe after the New Year."
The Transcender yawned and then laughed: "From Christmas to New Year's, and with preparation time, they can rest for at least a month. Yeah, I'm such a good guy."
"Alright, it's time to follow them and see how Christmas Eve ends."
