Chapter 899 Christmas Eve
"You did a great job, Spider-Man. She's fine now."
An unexpected incident occurred on Peter's way home with Cindy. Peter encountered a little girl who had collapsed on the road. She looked to be only eleven or twelve years old. The girl had no clues about her identity and no cell phone. Instead of taking her to the hospital or calling an ambulance, he took her to a charity event.
Fortunately, Martin Lee hadn't rested yet and still had time to take care of the little girl. So Peter handed the unconscious girl over to the charity banquet before coming out and seeing Cindy waiting for him outside.
"Sorry to have kept you waiting."
"It's fine, I'm free anyway."
Peter was momentarily stunned when he heard the word "leisure," since he hadn't been associated with it for a long time.
The two then swung on their webs and strolled through Manhattan that night, intending to take Cindy home. But Cindy seemed to have other ideas. She swung on her webs in the other direction and ended up on the roof of a tall building.
Peter followed closely behind and saw where Cindy had come from. In front of him was Rockefeller Center, where the very famous giant Christmas tree stood.
Cindy looked at the tree, so Peter asked, "Are you planning to go down and take a look?"
"No, there are too many people downstairs. It's much better to watch from here."
Cindy looked at the Christmas tree for a short while before thanking them again: "Thank you."
"What's wrong?"
"I know you're taking care of me because my family isn't around, which is why you're having a Christmas party—that might sound a bit presumptuous, but I think that's the truth."
"—Yes, I think there's nothing wrong with Christmas being more lively."
Cindy kept staring at the Christmas tree for a while, then suddenly asked Peter, "Peter?"
"Um?
'
"Have you always felt that this whole thing happened because of you?"
Cindy was referring, of course, to the incident where the scorpion found her house and attacked her family. Peter paused for a moment, then Cindy continued, "I'm a little worried; I have a feeling you'll think it's your fault."
"I'm not that dramatic," Peter scratched the back of his head. "Although sometimes I do think that if we weren't in such close contact, Scorpion might not have targeted you, but these things aren't something we can control, are they?"
Peter paused for a moment after saying this. If there was anything Peter regretted, it was that he had listened to Cindy's advice and hadn't killed the scorpion outright. Killing it would have saved trouble; Cindy wouldn't have had to do it herself.
As for Cindy's family's situation, Peter can't say he bears no responsibility at all, but it seems that Nick Fury's side has a bigger problem.
After listening to Peter's words, Cindy seemed to relax a bit: "Let's go downstairs then, I want to go see the Christmas tree."
After saying that, Cindy took the lead and jumped off the roof. Peter smiled and quickly followed. After landing, the two found a secluded spot and removed their uniforms. Peter simply removed the nanobots, while Cindy's task was even simpler, as her suit was entirely formed by her abilities, making removal very easy.
The two changed into casual clothes and walked to the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Plaza. There were many pedestrians and tourists nearby, all there to see the glittering Christmas tree.
"This tree is very big, but other than that, it doesn't seem to be any different."
"Every year on December 24th, this Norway spruce tree, planted here in 1932, is adorned with over 50,000 LED lights and 408 kilograms of Swarovski crystal stars, truly making it dazzling," Peter explained to Cindy. "However, its fame stems from the fact that it was transplanted by the people at Rockefeller Center, ultimately because of the name Rockefeller."
Cindy looked at the tree, then at the others, and suddenly remarked, "It seems like the lives of people who come here are no different from those before superheroes appeared?"
"Um----"
"I don't know, but I hope their lives haven't gotten any worse, that would be good enough."
After hearing this, Cindy was silent for a moment, then asked Peter a question: "If there were no superheroes, would we still know each other?"
Cindy had asked herself this question back in the Kang Dynasty. In fact, it wasn't even necessary. If there hadn't been that spider, the two of them would have almost never met, let alone experienced what followed.
Peter didn't know the answer to the question either, so he chose to answer something completely different: "Someone once did a sociological experiment: the number of people between you and any other stranger is no more than six. In other words, even strangers are never really that far apart."
"So this question might not be very meaningful. We might never meet, but what we do will definitely affect each other. That's just how our world works; everyone is actually closer than we imagine—"
Peter didn't finish his sentence because Cindy had already wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. After a silence that was perhaps not short, Cindy finally released him.
"If we had never met, perhaps this wouldn't have happened."
Peter opened his mouth, then looked at Cindy under the glittering Christmas tree and gave his answer.
"But we met."
The two looked at each other in silence for a moment, then Cindy took two steps back: "Well then, I'll leave you here. I'll go back by myself."
"Are you alright?"
Cindy shook her head, then smiled at Peter: "Merry Christmas, Peter."
"Merry Christmas."
After waving goodbye to Cindy, Peter took out his phone. The network was finally back online, and he was bombarded with messages from Gwen. He rushed home, arriving after nine o'clock, but thankfully everyone was waiting for him. Aunt May even couldn't help but complain.
"Why are you so late, Peter?"
"Excuse me, Aunt May, I encountered a little girl who had collapsed on the road, and I have to take her to the charity dinner." Peter fabricated a story and then sat down. Sure enough, George Stacy hadn't returned, so Gwen was also seated at the table.
Peter decided to put aside the embarrassment of what had just happened and pretend nothing had occurred, preparing his meal.
