Chapter 516: Inhumane Scene
Chapter 516: Inhumane Scene
Captain America raised one hand, and his team paused as drones flew by. He heard something behind him, turned around, and saw the Wrecker pacing anxiously.
"Oh," the Wrecker King muttered, "When can we start the big fight?"
Black Widow, who was standing next to him, couldn't help but laugh softly, and she patted his helmet.
"Just be patient, big guy," she assured the Wrecker. "Once we find the right moment, we'll distract them. We need to create some noise."
The Wrecker King was full of anticipation at the moment, and his heart was filled with ecstasy at the thought of tearing this place apart. During this relatively silent march, he had to admit that this place did make him feel creepy.
"This feels wrong," the hunter muttered, running his hands lightly over the wall, rubbing his fingers in the black dust that had fallen from the wall. "This whole place makes me feel uneasy."
"I agree with you, Hunter," the technician said, narrowing his eyes at the empty rooms they passed.
There is a table in the room with various operating tools scattered on and around it. From the outside, it looks unremarkable.
"There's a door here that can't be opened." Crosshair suddenly spoke, standing in front of the door at the end of the corridor they were in.
"Do you think Tap and Karen can solve this problem?" Hunter asked, and Black Widow responded by shaking her head.
"Let's not distract them," she said, stepping forward silently and raising her wrist pad to the control panel next to the door. It took the technician only a few seconds to successfully open the door, and then...
The two sliding doors slowly opened, and the scene that came into view seemed like a nightmare.
First there was a sickening stench that nearly made the entire team nauseous. Even with the helmets worn by the alien team, their filters were unable to block the smell, and they coughed and nearly retched.
"What on earth is this..." The hunter asked in confusion after seeing the room the team was staring at. Everyone fell silent, as if shocked by the scene before them.
"Uh..." Captain America's words rolled around in his throat and he almost lost his voice. "Where is this place?" he asked doubtfully, with deep confusion in his eyes.
The scene before me seemed to be at its mildest to describe as grotesque, disgusting and disturbing.
The place where they were seemed like an unknown laboratory.
Countless corpses were scattered in every corner. Whether it was the floor, table or wall, they were all filled with incomplete bodies.
There were arms, legs, chests, heads, each one hung on chains, entangled by tendrils, placed on operating tables, or even nailed to the wall.
They all have one thing in common: the interweaving of metal and flesh.
The room was filled with clones, but there were also other species. The whole scene seemed like a horror movie. No amount of words could describe the extreme disgust and discomfort that the team members felt at the moment.
Even the usually calm and composed Aiss seemed a little surprised at this moment. When his eyes fell on a clone trooper whose chest was cut open and the metal and flesh were almost fused together, he felt his rifle grip tightened. Those once empty eyes now seemed to be filled with some kind of emotion...
This must have been the desperate expression on his face before he died.
Although Crosshair was a person who felt disgust and lacked interest in regular clones, the scene before him still left him speechless.
"What kind of technology is this..." In the dead silence, the voice of the Wrecker King broke the silence. "What are they doing here?"
The hunter glanced at the burly soldier, and was shocked by the sudden sight. The usually noisy clones also became silent, their faces full of confusion and fear.
The power of technology was displayed in an almost mechanical manner, as the Wrecker King dully scanned every individual and body part with his eyes.
"Cell analysis and reconstruction." The technician's voice was cold and mechanical. "This is an experiment to integrate machines and humans at the molecular level."
Black Widow's eyes fell on an intact clone soldier, who was placed in a tube without a single flaw or wound. Her heart was trembling, and one hand unconsciously raised up and pressed against the glass, as if trying to touch the unreachable reality... An uncomfortable feeling of nausea enveloped her soul, and she kept echoing Ultron's motives in her mind, wondering why he did this.
She thought back to that first meeting at the so-called "victory" party. A genocidal AI was talking about ways to bring peace to this era.
"As long as humans cannot change themselves, they cannot achieve true progress." Ultron's voice echoed in her ears.
"evolution."
Captain America heard the low voice of Black Widow.
"Evolution, have you heard of this word, captain?" she asked quietly, attracting the attention of everyone around them.
Black Widow turned slowly, a heavy sadness on her face and fear in her eyes.
"Do you remember what Ultron said?" she asked Captain America directly, "especially his ideas about how to achieve peace?"
Captain America was slightly stunned, with a slightly confused expression on his face, but he soon understood the meaning.
"You can't be serious," he muttered to himself.
Black Widow just shook her head. "We're all scared of him, Steve."
"Sorry." The hunter said, obviously dissatisfied with the vague conversation between them. "For those of us who don't know the inside story..."
"I'm sorry," Captain America said sincerely, "This is just our past with Ultron. We know why he did what he did."
"I've heard Black Widow mention evolution." The technician's voice suddenly rose. "Does that have anything to do with what Ultron did?"
"What exactly do all those talks about peace mean?" asked the Wrecker King breathlessly, his face looking a little pale.
Captain America took a deep breath and began to explain in detail.
"Ultron's original intention was to make our world more peaceful," he said, "but after he started working, his concept of peace became distorted."
"In his opinion, humanity on our planet is stagnant with no real means of advancement," Black Widow added, turning back to the clone in the tube. "So he believes that a pretty drastic measure to achieve what he calls peace would be to wipe out all life on Earth to make way for his metal utopia or whatever he wants."
"So what is he doing here?" Crosshair asked, staring at another metal-covered corpse, his right arm and leg inlaid with cold metal.
"Evolution." Black Widow's voice echoed in the air, "This is his goal—"
"Forcibly transforming biological bodies to build an indestructible army." The technician summarized succinctly, "His evolved army."
The hunter frowned and muttered with deep disgust: "Is all this for the so-called peace? It's as if you are creating a monster, but claiming to be well-intentioned."
Captain America shook his head and clarified: "Some of us did try. Our founding members had good intentions, but..."
Black Widow took over the conversation with a melancholy look: "The best intentions often lead to the worst results."
Captain America lowered his head and said in a low voice: "The cause of all this is that we failed to stop him the first time."
Black Widow walked towards him gently, frowning, and patted his shoulder gently. "Hey, don't blame yourself too much." Her tone was full of comfort, "Ella told me not to blame yourself."
"So what should we do now?" The Wrecker King asked with sympathy, looking at the clone trapped in the tube.
